Majesty

When I am in the cockpit at Flight Level 370 I often get these wonderful vistas that the camera just can not capture. I can take a pano and get the image of the view but I don't think there is a camera made that can grab the hundreds of thousands of square miles in true three dimensions. What it does do is provide a different view that often is not brought to public viewing.

This image above is not from a low level flight but rather one day while I was driving home from Columbus OH on US route 23. I had just driven through a very good thunderstorm and this is the view I was blessed to behold. Some of the aspects of this shot I got with My Canon G9 was the tail end of the dark thunderstorm that matched the foreground semi-silhouette of the tree line. Obviously the sun rays are the dominant subject of this image but the sun is also lighting an area of clouds off in the distance to the left. This is just a wonderful view of natures beauty that God routinely paints for us to enjoy.

Lofty Night

On that same flight from DFW-GRR a week ago after I had taken the spider web shot the sun was beginning to set in the West (No! Really... it was!) When the atmosphere is hazy, which is just about anytime now, but otherwise clear there is a visual phenomenon that occurs in the Eastern sky. When the sun starts to go below the Western horizon, the earths shadow begins to be seen in the haze layer to the East. This is literally the edge of night. The shot below shows this quite dramatically. If you can make out the distant star, the earths shadow is just above it. I was somewhat limited with the view I had from 16D but I am always mesmerized by this image when I am up front  because the view is so much more spectacular. Specs are from the Canon G9 with ISO 100, 1/3 second at f/2.8.

Twenty minutes later I saw the view below out the left side of the aircraft and jumped over to 15A to get this shot. The only thing I did in Lightroom was crop the wing out some to give the image some intrigue. The diagonal line you see its the leading edge of the wing. Yes the horizon is near the middle of the shot but to get the width of the horizon in and a true appreciation of the colors of the waning sunset that was a rule I was swilling to break. So there!

Specs on this again are shot with the G9, ISO200, 1/10th second at f/2.8. Two truly spectacular scenes I attempted to capture and share. Enjoy!

Snow Day

This was it this morning before I left for work. Didn't even bother leaving the house yesterday and the day before the temp was 45 and rain that melted all the snow on the streets and driveway. By the time I left for work at 10:00 this morning I had the eight inches blown out of the drive and sidewalks. Right now (9:30 PM) it is 14 degrees and still snowing. On the other hand I am in Little Rock and the temp is 48 degrees and no snow.

To bad I can't have a snow day from work.
