On my way home from the West Coast last tour I had to go through DFW then on to GRR. On that flight I was in a Jungle Jet (ERJ 145) that I was pleasantly surprised was not full and I had my own two seats. Must be the fall off of AA customers for the paying of bags thing. Anyhow, it was getting close to sunset and I looked across the aircraft where I saw this spider web on the window.
I asked the lady sitting in the seat if she could lean forward so I could get a picture. She was cool with that and I got the shot. So did about five other people that were interested. Then the question came up. You guessed it... How did that get there.
The best explanation I could provide was that while the aircraft was on the ground in Dallas, a spider decided to spin a web (either the spider is very efficient or the airline is not). Once the aircraft climbed up to the cooler flight levels the moisture in the silk from the spider began to crystalize and that is what the suns light is refracting off of. Very cool!
The line of silk/crystal going off the left side was probably when the slipstream finally overcame the spiders ability to hang on. Must have scared the silk out of the little bugger!
Later... Doug
