Way Cool Picture

This is one of those time where you just take a picture not really thinking that is is going to be anything. I was conducting a checkride and we were on the arrival into Fort Myers Florida. I had my Canon G9 with me and placed it up on the ceiling, resting the forward part of the camera on my finger to adjust the angle of the shot. This coupled with the slight turbulence that we were getting created a pit of camera shake. The G9 has a nice little image stabilization effect to it but it is no EF 70-200 IS lens. Not even close.

I opened the lens up as much as possible which for the G9 is f/2.8 and that left ISO and shutter speed to get the exposure right. I did not want to go too high on the ISO as that is a very weak point for the G9 so only pushed that to ISO 200. That pretty much left shutter speed. One of the really nice functions of the G9 is the ability to see on the screen the effect of the camera setting. Be it shutter speed, aperture, ISO, or even white balance. So I dialed in the shutter speed until it looked right on screen and hoped for the best. No use hold the breath on this one 3.2 seconds was going to be iffy at best. What makes this image so cool is not the cockpit but the light lines created by the 140 knots of speed and the 3.2 second of exposure.

I took three shots and the one above was the best of those three. It also happened to be the first of the three. Go figure.

By the way, the guy passed his ride.

I am back in the office painting for a couple of days before we are off to Maryland.

Take care... Doug
