Some time ago Scott Kelby had a post on his Photoshop Insider blog about a fan that he used for studio glamor, fashion, and even portrait photography, here is the link. It sounded pretty good so I went to the site (here is the BLOWiT link) and picked one up. It has been sitting in the box on a shelf since then and I finally got a chance to use it. I have to tell you it was sweet!
After mounting it on a light stand and positioning it I cranked it up to the high setting and it was not at all noisy, just a hum and wind noise. To the point that I had to adjust a light and forgot it was on. Samantha was my subject and she had contacts. Made not to self... When not shooting, turn off the fan. Here is a before and after of the fans usage.
I would do one of those Before and After things but if you can't figure it our... Well, what can I say! The fan give a definite different look and it may not be for everyone but it is one more tool in the photographic arsenal. Personally I like the look.
A funny story goes along with this image. While I was shooting Samantha's boyfriend and his sister were in the studio while I was shooting. I saw some hair that was not being cooperative and asked Samantha to shake her hair. Tom and Sandy both piped up with snide remarks about me making lewd comments to Samantha. Of course joking, they must have thought it a little kinky for "dad" to be asking Tom's girlfriend to shake anything. Of course I was in photographer mode and did not find it unusual at all.
Anyhow, that's the Blow-It story.
Cya tomorrow... Doug
