Cool Sky Darkening in Photoshop

I was going over some training podcasts the other day and ran across one of Matt Kloskowski’s Photoshop Killer Tips and saw this. Quite often when you get the images into the computer the sky never seems as vivid or blue as you thought you saw it. This is an pretty cool way to correct this issue. The into image above is the finished product and here is how it started.
The first thing is to duplicate the background image and apply a layer style.

You want to select the Gradient Overlay to get the effect we are looking for here.
What you end up with is in the image below. A black to ahite gradient is the default product of this selection. The key is in the blending mode but we want to do one thing first.

Next to the gradient selection in the dialog, you need to check the Reverse box. This puts the black on top so we can apply the effect using a blending mode.

You want to use the Soft Light blending mode to apply the gradient to the image.

This does two things as the gradient goes from black to white. Obviously the sky will go darker but the foreground will go brighter which may not be the desired effect. Here we want to get into the Gradient Editor so we can change the effect. You do this by clicking on the gradient strip in the Layer Style dialog box.

You could select the second preset box for a black to transparent or you can click on the color stop indicated by the circled pointer and change the Opacity (below) to zero.
This changes the white to transparent allowing the original tonality to come out of the effect. If the effect is being applied to deeply into object above the horizon line you can adjust the Scale to make the gradient wider or more defined and move the gradient right on the image to place it where you have the best result. Style has to be Linear and the Angle must be at 90 degrees for the effect to produce the desired effect.

Tomorrow I will correct one other item in this image that I did not address here but it is shown in the first two images.

Have a great day and take care... Doug
