iPad... Finally

The apple iPad has been the rave since its revelation behind the Apple curtain of secrecy in April of 2010. In November I officially put it on my Christmas list to no avail. So as the new year came, so did my decision to purchase an iPad. So far there have been no surprises. It is a super-sized iPod Touch from the standpoint of integration. Where it excels from the Touch is in the steroid boosted applications. So occasionally I will be reviewing iPad Apps here on the PeekFotoBlog. One such application is the Photo Transfer App.
This is a great application if you have a laptop that is not designed to sync with the iPad you want to send or receive files form.
Here is the splash screen of the app on the iPad.
The default screen is in the receive mode as indicated by the circled button in the upper left of the image above. You must have both the iPad and the computer on the same wireless network for the app to work but it is fast. It instructs you to go to a specific URL and the following screen appears.
Pressing the upload button takes you to a typical file selection dialog window and when you accept the selections (yes multiple selections are possible) the transfer is really fast.
You can go the other way also in sending images from your iPad to the computer. There are a couple of items that the app is a little quirky with.

  1. Many networks do not allow this type of transfer. Hotels are a big one for this. The good news is you can set up an ad-hoc network and do the transfer just the same.
  2. One note on the ad-hoc setup is the network must be setup first (duh!), the iPad must connect to it in the Wi-Fit options in Settings. Give it a bout a minute to settle down and do all the hand shaking that is necessary and then start the app.
  3. The app does not allow you to designate which of your iPad Photo Albums to place the images. It goes to the Saved Photos Album.
  4. After the transfer when you sync via iTunes, the uploaded images are not viewable on the desktop. In other words, iTunes does not sync the images uploaded in your Saved Photo Album.
  5. If you are using portfolio viewer other than the one that is on the iPad, the images in your Saved Photo Album can be deleted without effecting the ones in the portfolio app.
All in all this is a really good iPad app and makes it easy to got photos to and from you iPad and other devices.

Take care all... Doug
