This image started two weeks ago and ended at 3:25 this morning. I was on my way back to the hotel after conducting a training event in the simulator in Wichita KS. It was evening and I thought to myself that this would make and interesting photo. It just happened this evening I had left my Canon G9 in my flight bag at the hotel. I thought that I could get my camera and come back to grab the shot. Being tired and late, the bed won the argument and the next morning I was off on an airliner.
Fast forward two weeks to early this morning. The thought of the great shot was clear in my mind but so was sleep. The fact there was absolutely no traffic on the road was the key to stopping and taking the shot. I backed the car up to where I could pull it over into the median, put the flashers on and started to walk (the best zoom lens) towards the bridge to get the ideal framing.
So, you say... "What am I looking at?" Well it is a bridge, but one that goes under the taxiway and runway of Beech Field. Hence the Beechcraft name on the overpass. It was shot with my Canon G9 hand held at 7.4 MM, f/2.8, and 0.8 seconds. The first shot had a bunch of shake. Looking at the settings I realized the ND filter was still turned on from earlier in the day. Turning off the ND filter helped a lot but there was still an unacceptable level of shake at the 8/1oth of a second. Finally I end up sitting on the ground in the middle of the road with my elbows on my knees holding the camera. White balance was a different thing altogether. The Beechcraft sign was just way to washed out by the overwhelming glow of the street lights in the tunnel. I didn't feel like taking the time to get it right in the camera as I was not sure if it was going to be possible. That and the o'dark 30 time of day, I would leave it for Photoshop.
Hence the story of the two week photo.
More tomorrow... Doug
